Milk Depot Project
The OCBFC is dedicating a great deal of time and energy in the development of a network of local milk depots that can two very important things: First, is to support the San Jose Mother's Milk Bank in obtaining donor breastmilk from the greater Orange County Area. Secondly, we want to increase the use of donor milk in the local NICU's though an intensive educational and support effort aimed at potential donors, potential recipients of donor milk, and the potential health care provider prescribers of donor milk.
Since 2004 the OCBFC has accomplished a great deal in the journey to make milk depots and the prescribing of donor milk a reality. Here is a short list of our recent activies:
1 - November 2004: Convened a "Town Hall - Call-to-Action" with participants from every major hospital in Orange County participating.
2 - Received funding from The Healthcare Foundation for Orange County to collaborate with the UCI Medical Center - Lacatation Services program in the development of a "Mother's Milk Center" business plan.
3 - Created three educational brochures that target the potential donors, users, and prescribers of donor milk.
4 - Created the "Certified Milk Bank Screener" training program with the San Jose Mother's Milk Bank. First training to be held on 8/21/06.
Our next steps will be to create a network of satellite locations that can have regularly scheduled drop off dates for all certified donors.

Recent Speaker's Bureau and Milk Depot Committee Event

On January 10-12, 2007 the OCBFC were graciously hosted at the 2007 March of Dimes Conference in Long Beach. The volunteers who "worked the booth" were: Virginia Bernal, Nancy Clifton-Hawkins, Verlil Hawthorne, and Kristie Holt. All three days were wonderful. Each day we were able to meeting and educate individuals from all walks of life, from community health workers to Doctors! Questions were both intelligent and inviting. One of the biggest challenges facing many hospitals in using donor milk, we learned, was in acquiring the tissue banking license. It was a wonderful three days. We would like to extend a HUGE Thank You to Miriam Erdosi at the Orange County Chapter of the March of Dimes for making our three days there possible.
